"The Private Life of Choanoflagellates: Uncovering the Origin of Sperm and Eggs"
Dr. Alain Garcia De Las Bayonas is a developmental biologist and postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory of Nicole King at the University of California, Berkeley, and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. His research explores the evolution of cellular and developmental mechanisms, using choanoflagellates, the unicellular relatives of animals, as a model to understand what these organisms can reveal about the origins of multicellular life. Prior to joining Berkeley, he completed his Ph.D. at Aix-Marseille University in France, where he studied the molecular mechanisms underlying epithelial morphogenesis in Drosophila embryos. His work has been published in high-profile journals including eLife, Nature Cell Biology, Current Biology, and Developmental Cell. He is also an active mentor and science communicator and has received fellowships and awards, including a long-term fellowship from the Human Frontier Science Program.
