Minors in the Department of Molecular Genetics
The Department of Molecular Genetics offers undergraduate minors in two disciplines, Molecular Genetics and Plant Biology. Listed below is information regarding required coursework for these minors under quarters and semesters. Follow the links below to be directed to the appropriate information.

Molecular Genetics Minor:  
Students can earn the Molecular Genetics Undergraduate Minor by completing the necessary prerequisites and the Molecular Genetics core series of classes. The minor program must be approved by a major advisor from the Department of Molecular Genetics (see Advising to find your major advisor). Students who began the Molecular Genetics minor under the quarter system and graduate under the semester system should contact their Molecular Genetics major advisor for specific advice on completing the minor under the semester system. 

Molecular Genetics Undergraduate Minor:

  • Required Prerequisites:
    • Biology 1113 and 1114
    • Chemistry 1210 and 1220
      (Honors or more advanced versions of these prerequisites may be substituted)
       
  • Required Core Courses:
    • One of the following courses:
      Molecular Genetics 4500, 4500E, or 4606
    • At least two of the following courses:
      Molecular Genetics 4700, 5607 (or 5607E), 5608 (or 5608E), or 5645
       
  • Elective courses (core plus electives must total at least 14 semester hours):
    • Molecular Genetics courses:
      2220H, 4503, 4591S, 4703, 5193, 5194, 5300, 5601 or 5602, 5632, 5650
    • Other Life Sciences courses:
      Microbiology 4130, 5161H
    • No more than 3 semester hours graded as S/U can count toward the minor.
    • Other elective courses may be substituted with permission of advisor.

Molecular Genetics  minor program guidelines
The following guidelines govern minors:

  • Required for graduation:  No
  • Credit hours required:  1000 level courses shall not be counted toward the 14 credit hr minimum.
  • Transfer credit hours allowed:  A maximum of 6
  • Overlap with the GE:  Permitted, unless specifically disallowed by an individual minor program.
  • Overlap with Major: Allowed as long as the minor contains 12 unique hours.
  • Overlap between minors:  Each minor completed must contain 12 unique hours.
  • Grades required:
  • Minor Approval:  The minor program description sheet indicates if the minor course work must be approved by:
  • Filing the minor program form: The minor program form must be filed at least by the time the graduation application is submitted to a college/school counselor.
  • Changing the minor:  Once the minor program is filed in the college office, any changes must be approved by:
    • The academic unit offering the minor 

Plant Biology Minor:
Students can earn the Plant Biology Undergraduate Minor by completing the necessary prerequisites and required courses. The minor program must be approved by a Plant Biology faculty advisor from the Department of Molecular Genetics (see Advising to find your major advisor). Students who began the Plant Biology minor under the quarter system and graduate under the semester system should contact their Plant Biology faculty advisor for specific advice on completing the minor under the semester system.

Plant Biology Undergraduate Minor – Semester System:

  • Required Prerequisites:
    • Biology 1113 and 1114
    • Chemistry 1210 and 1220
      (Honors or more advanced versions of these prerequisites may be substituted)
       
  • Required Core Courses:
    • Molecular Genetics 3300
       
  • Elective courses (must total at least 11 semester credit hours):
    • Molecular Genetics courses:
      3436, 4503, 5193, 5194, 5601 or 5602, 5630, 5643, 5735, 6625
    • In order to count toward the Plant Biology minor, MOLGEN 4503, 4998, 4998H, 5193, and 5194 must be carried out in a Plant Biology laboratory and/or on a plant topic.  Lab classes 5601 and 5602 must contain a plant module to count towards the Plant Biology minor.
    • Up to 3 semester credit hours of MOLGEN 4998 (or 4998H) Undergraduate Research and/or 4999 (or 4999H) Thesis Research can count towards the Plant Biology minor.
    • No more than 5 semester hours graded as S/U can count toward the minor.
    • Other elective courses may be substituted with permission of advisor.
