BETHA award to BioEYES project
Congratulations to Sharon Amacher and Uyen Tram who were recently awarded a grant to support the Ohio State BioEYES hub as they expand their reach into additional area classrooms. Project BioEYES is an engaging curriculum that brings genetics, development, and cell biology into 4th and 5th grade classrooms. Starting in 2019 Amacher, Tram, and colleagues have brought live zebrafish and microscopes into 21 classrooms. Students observe embryonic development, formulate hypotheses, and learn to graph their data. Meanwhile, their classroom teachers receive training that empowers them to independently teach the new curriculum. The BETHA grant from the Battelle Endowment will enable the project to expand into additional schools in the Columbus City School District, while engaging Ohio State undergraduates in this outreach program. The group will additionally organize a spring BioEYES festival bringing together members of the OSU community, prior students in the program, and the general public.
