Catalyst funding to Patrice Hamel and colleagues

Patrice Hamel

Congratulations to Patrice Hamel who is a co-investigator on a recently awarded President's Research Excellence Catalyst Award entitled "Artificial Metalloenzymes for the Sustainable Production of Renewable Fuels: Conversion of Solar Energy and Plant Waste to Hydrogen and Ethylene by Microorganisms". These awards support cross- and interdisciplinary teams to pursue large-scale, high-impact research that addresses emerging or existing challenges of national and international societal importance.

Dr. Hamel will work with colleagues Justin North (College of Arts and Sciences, Lead PI), Hannah Shafaat (College of Arts and Sciences), and Ajay Shah (College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences) to engineer biological systems that can convert sunlight, CO2, and agricultural biomass into hydrogen and ethylene by photosynthetic algae and bacteria. Renewable, scalable sources for hydrogen and ethylene will support emerging fossil fuel replacements.

We are delighted for Patrice!
