Molecular Genetics hosts field trips for local elementary schools!

Visitors looking at fluorescent zebrafish
During Spring 2026, fourth and fifth graders from four of our seven BioEYES partner schools (Barrington ES, Hamilton STEM, Lindbergh ES, and Parkmoor ES) visited OSU West Campus for a field trip to engage in hands-on STEM activities that enhance their fall in-classroom BioEYES experience. These junior scientists toured the fish facility, viewed live fluorescent zebrafish embryos, worm larvae, and fruit fly larvae under a microscope, did Punnett square genetics, and learned how to decode DNA messages!

We deeply appreciate all volunteers who helped make the field trips a success; we could not have done it without their time and energy! Volunteers for the four field trips were:
  • Undergraduate students: Aeryn Riegel, Alyssa Pennell, Ben Owens, Brianna Riccio, Carli Genova, Carolina Gusso, Ellie Lang, Elsie Whelan, Gavin Muniz, Kai Dennis, Kailey Metz, Mahir Mazumder, Neil Dean, and Xing Li
  • Graduate students: Anna Lubertozzi, Annika Chura, Clare Austin, Jon Fritz, Konor Oyman, Lily Schumacher, Madeline Burghaze, and Sam Darr

  • Postdoctoral fellows: Geremy Lerma, Madhura Yapa, Rene Arvola, Xingli Li, and Yu-Chieh Chung

  • Staff and Faculty: Tom Gallagher, Emily Kridel, Sharon Amacher, Melissa Petreca, and Jaime Sabel
We also thank Brendan Pew (Tang lab) and Shane Eisenhower (Simcox lab) for providing worm and fly larvae for microscopy demonstrations.
