Congratulations to Anita Hopper, whose NIH grant entitled "tRNA processing and nuclear-cytoplasmic dynamics" has been renewed for an additional four years. The work in the Hopper lab addresses tRNAs, which are small noncoding conserved RNAs that are essential for decoding the genome and regulating the proteome in response to nutrient availability and stress. Mutations of genes involved in tRNA biology cause human disorders ranging from metabolic diseases, to neuromuscular diseases, and to cancer. The Hopper lab uses the budding yeast model to address key unknowns regarding tRNA biology including nuclear/cytoplasmic bidirectional trafficking, quality control, RNA processing, and intron turnover/function.
