NIH funding to Guramrit Singh

Guramrit Singh

Congratulations to Amrit Singh, whose NIH grant entitled "Post-transcriptional gene regulation by the exon junction complex" was recently funded for 5 years! Work in the Singh lab focuses on understanding how nuclear RNA processing shapes the composition and structure of messenger RNA-containing ribonucleoproteins (mRNPs) to eventually control mRNA fate in human cells. The funded work examines RNA surveillance pathways, which act to suppress genetic errors and also regulate normal gene expression. This process serves essential functions in eukaryotic cells. Funded by this grant, the Singh lab will define functions of the essential and non-essential components of the vertebrate RNA surveillance apparatus and investigate why mutations in these ubiquitous machineries lead to defects in neuronal and muscular tissues. The knowledge gained will be key to understand human diseases such as autism and intellectual disability and to devise new therapies.

Congratulations to Amrit and his lab!
