Waller Lectures 2025

The department hosted José R. Dinneny, Professor of Biology, Stanford University for the Waller lecture series March 19th-20th. Dr. Dinneny presented a scientific lecture entitled "The divining root: Understanding how plants get their water through development" as well as a public lecture entitled "A tale of two slopes: How roots hold the key to our future in this century and the next". We were delighted to be joined by several of Dr. Waller's grandchildren, many of whom came from out of state to attend both lectures. A tour of the 12th Avenue Greenhouse before the public lecture was a highlight!
Special thanks to the student committee: Lauren Levesque (chair), Caleb Gooden, Oliver Marchus, Lilly Schumacher, Isabella Walter, and their faculty advisor Dr. Anna Dobritsa for putting together such an engaging event!
The Adolph E. Waller Memorial Lectureship was established September 5, 1975, with his bequest and funds public lectures in plant sciences. Adolph E. Waller completed his Ph.D. at The Ohio State University in 1918 where he participated in the early efforts to control wheat stem rust through the USDA barberry eradication program. After postdoctoral work at the Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew, England Dr. Waller joined the staff of The Ohio State University Department of Botany in 1919 and was a Professor of Botany for 45 years prior to his retirement in 1964.
